What Tests Should I Get?

We recommend regular HIV testing to anyone who engages in penetrative sex (anal or vaginal) or to those who share injection drug equipment.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are site specific infections. This means that the bacteria are able to infect different sites in the body, like the throat, rectum, and genital tracks, so we recommended testing all the parts you use for sex. If you only test one site, but use multiple site or body parts for sex, it is possible to miss an infection at a different site.

If you are an anal receptive partner (bottom) we recommend a rectal swab for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea. If you are an insertive partner for anal or vaginal sex (top), or are the vaginal receptive partner, we recommend getting a urine test for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea. If you perform oral sex, we recommend getting a throat swab for Chlamydia/Gonorrhea.

We recommend making syphilis testing a regular part of your testing routine. The CDC recommends that gay, bisexual men, and transgender women who have sex with men get a syphilis test every six months. The CDC recommends others get a syphilis test once a year. If you have recently had a sexual encounter with someone who has tested positive for syphilis, we recommend getting a syphilis test.
